William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, born in 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, was one of America's greatest social activists, scholars, and writers. Of mixed French, Dutch, and African parentage, he first confronted the problem of racial prejudice when he attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
